Volt supports Stop Ecocide

Volt supports Ecocide International - they work to make intentional and reckless destruction of nature an international crime and in March 2024 the European Parliament came up with a new directive that replaces the 2008 and 2009 directives.

The new directive is called Protection of the environment through criminal law and you can read it here.

Volt supports EU legislation to stop Ecocide

In March 2024, the 2008 EU Directive on the Protection of the Environment through Criminal Law was revised.

We believe that ecocide should be added as a new criminal offence that creates a deterrent effect on the most serious and either widespread or long-term damage to nature.

Recognising ecocide as a crime in the directive will:

  • support and strengthen existing environmental legislation in all EU member states

  • create a much-needed "external border" for economic activity

  • Empower strategic positive change and innovation in politics and industry.

This is a legal and moral opportunity for the EU to lead the world in protecting life on earth: for us, for our children and for all living beings.

Volt supports Ecocide International because we need international communities to deliver real solutions.

The 5+1 Challenges

Volt has defined 5+1 fundamental Challenges that need to be tackled in each European country and in Europe as a whole.

Why 5 + 1 Challenges?

The 5 Challenges are basically the same for every country, but their implementation can be adapted on the national level to take into account local realities.

The +1 Challenge – our proposal to reform and strengthen the EU – is identical across all our national programmes.
